Columbus wins 2 in a row heading into 3 day break

Missed the post game for the Lima game; been pretty busy the last 2 days.

On Wednesday in Lima, the All-Americans defeated the Locos by a score of 5-3.

For 7 innings, the offense for both teams was nonexistent. One explanation for the lack of offense is the starting pitchers. Burny Mitchem, the best pitcher in the league thus far, went 5 innings, giving up one unearned run while striking out 8 and walking 3. Zach Elmer, the Lima starter, pitched 6 effective innings, giving up no runs on 3 hits while striking out 2 and walking none. However, these pitchers were most likely helped by the fact that Lima's field was built facing west. For those of you who have been outside at sunset--you know that the sun sets in the west, meaning that for 6 or 7 innings, hitters were essentially looking into the sun as the pitcher threw it. One Columbus hitter told me that he couldn't see the ball at all during his first at bat. Why the field was built facing west I don't know, but apparently someone forgot about the whole sunset thing.

After the sun went down, the offense started up for both teams. In the 8th, the All-Americans took a 2-1 lead on a poor decision by Lima pitcher Kevin Cahill. With Ryan Dew at 3rd and Cory Rupert at 2nd, Zack Leonard hit a comebacker to Cahill. Dew had drifted off the bag a bit too far, and Cahill tried to throw him out, but instead threw the ball into left field, scoring both Dew and Rupert. In the bottom half, the Locos came right back with 2 runs of their own on an Alex Schmid groundout and a balk with a runner on 3rd.

In the 9th, Zach Dygert led off with a hard lineout to center field. Chris Roberts hit what looked like a routine grounder to first, but it went right through Casey Ingle's legs. Robert Maddox followed with a single to right and Chris Roberts advanced to third on the play. Ryan Dew came through with an RBI single to tie the game. Tyler Rogers drew a walk to load the bases. Zack Leonard hit a ground ball to first, and Casey Ingle once again couldn't make the play. 2 runs scored as the ball went through his legs for the second time in the inning. Tim Mowry came on and got the save for the All-Americans.

Last night, the All-Americans beat the Xenia AIA 13-7. As this was the last game before the All-Star break, the All-Americans used 5 different pitchers in the game. Jeremy Williams, Troy Balduf, Kyle Hallock, Matt Shoemaker, and Mark Miller appeared in the game.

Unlike the night before, the All-Americans had no trouble seeing the ball last night. Columbus scored 13 runs on 12 hits. 3 of the runs were unearned, as Xenia made 4 errors in the first 4 innings. But the All-Americans bats, rather than Xenia's defense (or lack thereof) won this game.

3 different All-Americans knocked in 2 runs in the game. Ryan Dew, who is hopefully heating up for the second half, went 2-5, Kolbrin Vitek went 3-3, and Ben Klafczynski had a pinch-hit 2 RBI single to right.

The All-Americans now have 3 straight off days, then a game on Monday at Delaware (5 PM start), followed by the All-Star break Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

All Americans 7 Mariners 8

The All-Americans (10-10) fell to the Grand Lake Mariners last night by a score of 8 to 7.

The Mariners jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 2nd inning, and once again couldn't muster much against Dave Paddock, who threw a complete game shutout the last time Columbus played Grand Lake. This time, Paddock went 6 innings and gave up 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 2 and walking none. The All-Americans did figure out the three relievers that followed Paddock; they scored 3 runs off Matt Jordan, who only managed to get 1 out in the 7th; Nick Jensen gave up 2 runs in 1.2 innings of work, and Heath Riley escaped from a jam in the 9th to get a save.

The All-Americans took their time getting the bats going, and it turned out to be too little too late. By the time they started to score runs, Grand Lake was ahead 8-1; 3 All-American errors led to 4 unearned runs for the Mariners. In the 7th, a few singles and a few walks led to 3 runs for the All-Americans. In the 8th, Zach Dygert led off with a single and Cory Rupert followed with a double down the left field line. Dygert would score on a wild pitch. Zack Leonard knocked in Rupert with a sac fly. In the 9th, Hayden Johnston led off with a hard ground ball at shortstop Tim Fogerty, who bobbled the ball but was able to throw out Johnston at first. Chris Lewis singled and Robert Maddox, pinch-hitting for Kolbrin Vitek, hit a double off the right-center field wall and advanced to third on a throwing error, putting the tying run at 3rd with only one out. Unfortunately, Ben Klafczynski struck out; Zach Dygert was hit by a pitch, putting the winning run on first. But Cory Rupert made the final out on a fly ball to left center. It was a valiant effort by the All-Americans, but they came up one run short. Columbus racked up 11 hits in the game, along with 4 walks, 3 of them given out by Matt Jordan. Good job by the All-Americans to make the Grand Lake relievers work hard instead of first-pitch hacking.

Columbus currently stands in 3rd place, 5.5 games back of the Cincinnati Steam, winners of 8 straight. They won yet another 1-run game last night, defeating Xenia 5-4.

The All-Americans take on Lake Erie (8-8) tonight at 7 PM at Bill Davis Stadium. Pretty sure Brenden Stines will be pitching for the All-Americans.

The All-Star game is this weekend in Cincinnati; I'll write about the players the All-Americans will be sending to the game and will also put together some stats (the ones on the league site are pretty hard to read).

The All Americans (10-9) beat the Southern Ohio Copperheads (6-8) last night in Athens.

WP - Kolbrin Vitek (2-1) 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 K, 2 BB

The long ball was the story for the All-Americans last night. Hayden Johnston hit a grand slam, and Robert Maddox, Chris Roberts, and Ryan Dew also went deep. Every Columbus starter got a hit in the game, and the team racked up 15 total. The All-Americans took advantage of a pitching staff that has struggled so far this year. The Copperheads have a team ERA of 4.04, second to last in the league. Kolbrin Vitek, Kevin Mementowski, and Darrin Mumaw combined for the 5 hit shutout, striking out 8 in the process. With the shutout, the team ERA drops to 2.36, the lowest in the league.

Tonight, the All-Americans take on the Grand Lake Mariners (6-10) at Bill Davis Stadium at 7 PM.

All-Americans swept by Cincinnati

The All-Americans (9-10) were swept by the Cincinnati Steam (15-4) yesterday in Chillicothe.

Game 1:

Matt Shoemaker was hurt by a few Columbus errors early in the game. In the 1st, Tyler Rogers mishandled a ground ball, which was followed by a double, a walk, and a bases clearing double. Chris Roberts had some trouble with fly balls in left, with one glancing off his glove at the wall, which led to Cincinnati runs. However, Shoemaker didn't have his best stuff today. Many of the Steam's hits were line drives; a few of their outs were also well-hit. The All-Americans tried to stage a comeback, scoring 3 runs off Cincinnati reliever Bryan Earley in the 6th, but were shut down in the 7th by Adam Eaton.

Game 2:

Tony Bertucci started for Columbus and pitched effectively for 5 and 2/3 innings, but just couldn't get the third out in the 6th, giving up a game-tying double to Brandon Besl. He was relieved by Tim Mowry, who struck out Steve Brown to end the inning. In the 7th, the All-Americans were the beneficiaries of some bad luck. Jake Brown snuck a ground ball between Matthew Johnson and Cory Rupert up the middle for a single; a foot or two to the left or right and either one of them would have had it. The runner advanced to second on a groundout, and with 2 outs, Brad Gschwind hit a popup that landed just out of reach of right fielder Hayden Johnston and first baseman Kolbrin Vitek. Again, a foot or two either deeper or shallower and the ball would've been caught for an out. The All-Americans aren't getting the breaks, but the team needs to start making its own luck. Jeremy Wentworth lead off the bottom of the 1st with a walk for Columbus, but it was the team's only walk the entire game. The All-Americans need to start seeing more pitches; in this league, if you make a pitcher throw enough pitches in an at-bat, he's liable to make a mistake. Improved plate discipline is what's needed for a more succesful offense.

The All-Americans take on the Southern Ohio Copperheads (6-7) tonight at 5 PM in Athens. Kyle Hallock will be the starting pitcher. He's 0-0 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 IP. He's given up 11 hits, 6 walks, and struck out 10 in those 11 innings.

The All-Americans (9-7) defeated the Xenia AIA (7-9) last night in Xenia.

Burny Mitchem was dominant again, going 7 and 2/3 without giving up a hit and striking out 9. The All-Americans also racked up 9 hits and drew 6 walks. Cory Rupert reached base 5 times, going 3/3 with 2 walks. Zach Dygert drew 3 walks on the night. Though the Xenia pitching staff may not be as talented as some of the other teams' pitching staffs, it's good to see the All-Americans displaying better plate discipline. The team OBP now stands at .323.

Burny Mitchem still hasn't allowed an earned run in 20 IP. He's given up 6 hits and walked 4 in that time, while striking out 29 (13.1 K/9). Batters are hitting .090 against him.

Chris Lewis earned co-player of the week honors for last week. On the season, he's hitting .429/.492/.518 (1.010 OPS).

Tony Bertucci was pitcher of the week last week for his 8+ innings no-hit performance. Bertucci has allowed only 1 run in 13 innings (0.69 ERA) on 6 hits and 2 walks.

The All-Americans play tomorrow at Delaware (7-6). Tony Bertucci will take the hill for the 5 PM start at Ohio Wesleyan.

Was at my cousin's wedding, so I couldn't update this. The All-Americans went 3-2 in my absence, beating Lake Erie and Southern Ohio, losing to Lima, and splitting a double header with Anderson.

They are 2.5 games back of Cincinnati.

Tonight, the All-Americans (8-7) take on Xenia (7-8) in Xenia. Burny Mitchem (1-1), the league leader in ERA, batting average against, and strikeouts, takes the hill for the All-Americans.

The All-Americans (4-5) fell to the Cincinnati Steam (8-2) last night in Cincinnati.

The All-Americans wasted another solid outing from Burny Mitchem, who pitched 6 innings, gave up 2 hits, no runs, and struck out 10. The offense just hasn't shown up for Columbus yet. Other than the 13 runs they scored against Xenia (helped by 8 Xenia errors), Columbus hasn't scored more than 5 runs in a game. Looking at the line score for this game, it would seem like the bullpen blew it for the team, but the offense is putting enormous pressure on the pitching staff by only scoring 3.8 runs per game. The team ERA is 2.42, second in the league to Cincinnati's 2.00. So, the pitching has definitely been very good so far.

What's wrong with the offense? The first stat that jumps out at me is the very low team OBP. The All-Americans' team OBP stands at .300--last in the league. Cincinnati, the league leader at .385, has scored 23 more runs than the All-Americans in only one more game played. Hitters need to try to get deeper into counts instead of swinging at the first and second pitches of every at bat. The All-Americans are last in walks with 25. Delaware leads the league with 46.

Columbus travels to Newark to play Licking County (4-5) tonight at 7 PM.

This game was...ugly. 7 of the All-Americans' 13 runs were unearned, as Xenia committed 8 errors. However, the All-Americans let Xenia hang around--this game shouldn't have been close, but before 2 late runs by Columbus, it was only a 3-run game. Brenden Stines pitched effectively for 5 innings but walked 4 batters. All-Americans pitchers walked 7 batters tonight, which is far too many and is one of the reasons Xenia was in a game.

The All-Americans travel to Cincinnati tonight to face the Steam (7-2).

The All-Americans (3-4) were shut out by the Grand Lake Mariners (3-4) last night in Celina.

For the second game in a row, an opposing pitcher threw a complete game against the All-Americans. Not to take anything away from Dave Paddock's nice outing, but Columbus hitters were swinging very early in the count and not making him work at all. With only 2 strikeouts, Paddock wasn't exactly overpowering hitters, but then again, All-Americans hitters were swinging too early in the count for Paddock to get a strikeout, so maybe that explains the low strikeout total. Hopefully the day off today gets the team back on track.

Tomorrow the All-Americans travel to Stark County (4-1) for a double header, starting at 3 PM.

Sean Hoffman had a solid complete game outing tonight. He struck out 7, and had a nice 13/6 GB/FB ratio for the game. The All-Americans' defense tonight was less than stellar with 3 errors on the night. 2 of those errors led to 2 unearned runs, the difference in the game.

Though they only managed 2 runs, the Columbus offense was hitting the ball hard all night. Line drives once again found their way into fielders' gloves more than a couple times. Once those start falling, the run scoring should really pick up.

The pitching for the All-Americans was good again tonight; as Coach Mannino said on the bus after the game, the staff is going to keep us in most of our games, the offense needs to win the game. Tonight, the offense was unlucky yet again, and the defensive miscues were the difference in the game.

Tomorrow night the All-Americans travel to Grand Lake to take on the Mariners at 7:15 PM. Kolbrin Vitek will make his first start of the season for Columbus.

Matt Shoemaker pitched a fine game, better than his line score would indicate. A few of the 7 hits were seeing-eye singles that barely found holes between All-Americans infielders. He had a GB/FB ratio of 10/3 tonight, indicating that his sinking two-seamer was pretty effective. I didn't see much solid contact off Shoemaker until the 6th when Logan Williams doubled off the wall in left; the wind was blowing in, probably the only thing that stopped that one from going out. Other than that, the Cows didn't hit the ball very hard.

Has the offense picked up? The past 3 games (all wins), the All-Americans have had little trouble reaching base. Getting the timely hit has been the problem, though they've had some bad luck in that department. Some solid contact has resulted in hard outs right at fielders, which should balance out.

The pitching, however, has been very effective. The All-Americans pitchers have been stubborn giving out walks: they've walked 8 in 41 IP, 1.76 BB/9, an excellent rate. For comparison, the best BB/9 rate in the majors last season was 1.14, posted by Greg Maddux. The 1.76 mark would've been good enough for 8th overall among starting pitchers. All-Americans pitchers are averaging 6.6 K/9. The strikeout rate may seem low, but when coupled with the excellent BB rate, creates a very solid 3.74 K/BB, good enough for 12th out of all the starting pitchers in baseball. To sum it up, the Columbus pitching staff is most likely going to keep the team in the game, so most times the offense is going to determine the outcome for the All-Americans.

The All-Americans face the Lake Erie Monarchs (1-2) tomorrow night at Bowling Green. Jeremy Williams will take the mound for Columbus versus Sean Hoffman. Hoffman has pitched 2 and a third innings this year, giving up 3 hits and striking out 4 while allowing no runs.

The All-Americans (2-2) shut out the Licking County Settlers (1-1) in Newark last night.

The story of the game was great Columbus pitching. Burny Mitchem absolutely dominated Licking County hitters for 5 innings; Balduf struck out 2 in 3 innings, and Mumaw struck out 2 in the 9th to finish the game.

The wind was blowing out to left last night, and Chris Klimko took full advantage of that, putting a ball over the left field wall in the 4th inning. The All-Americans banged out 10 hits, but as hard as they hit the ball, it could've been easily 15. Many hitters hit line drives right at outfielders. Luck tends to even out in baseball (though maybe not in a season as short as this), so all they can do it continue to hit the ball hard and hope there aren't any fielders in the area.

Zack Leonard went 2-5 with a double, his second of the season.

The All-Americans (1-2) defeated the Lima Locos (1-1) in a game at Bill Davis Stadium this afternoon.

WP - Brenden Stines (1-0) 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 4 K

LP - Matt Morgan (0-1) 2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 1 K

Chris Lewis was 2/3 with a 2 rbi double in the 7th to break open the game. Chris Roberts hit the first HR of the season for the All-Americans in the 6th with a shot over the right field wall.
Brenden Stines had an excellent outing, pitching 7 innings, most of them very quick innings. Tim Mowry and Mark Miller each pitched a perfect inning to finish the game. The team looked a bit sloppy against Anderson yesterday, but were very crisp in the field today, the only error coming on a rushed throw by Zack Leonard. Chris Klimko picked off another runner today, this time coming with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. The runner was slow getting back to the back, Klimko fired it down there, and Leonard tagged him out. A rally killer, to be sure. The next hitter struck out looking to end the Lima threat. Klimko is going to shut down a lot of teams' running games with his arm this season. During the college season he threw out 17 of 24 would-be base stealers, an incredible 71% rate.

The All-Americans did leave 8 runners on base today, after leaving 12 in the previous two games. As the season goes on and players' approaches become better, expect those numbers to improve. The All-Americans need to continue to get on base; the timely hits will come.

Columbus has an off day tomorrow; Tuesday the All-Americans will travel to Licking County for a 7:00 PM game.

Columbus swept by Anderson to open season

The All-Americans (0-2) were swept by the Anderson Servants (2-0) in a double header on Saturday. The Servants, who won only 4 games last year, look like an improved team this year.

Reed Spitaels had a nice opening day for the Servants. He went 3/4 in the first game and knocked in 2 runs. For the All-Americans, Zack Leonard went 2/4 with an RBI. Leonard hit the ball hard all day; one of his outs came on a shot to the warning track in center, which the CF caught while leaping. Hard hit balls right at fielders was the story of the day for the All-Americans. Jeremy Wentworth showed the Great Lakes League the great speed that he displayed in the Cape, with 2 infield hits in the first game.

Kyle Hallock pitched a solid game for the All-Americans. He pitched 5 innings, gave up 4 hits, 2 runs (both earned), walked 2, and struck out 3. However, the bullpen couldn't keep Columbus in the game. Burny Mitchem allowed an unearned run and Jeremy Williams let in 2 runs in his inning of work. Both pitchers fell behind in the count to hitters constantly, which is a recipe for disaster. Perhaps it was first-game jitters, but let's hope that they get it figured out soon.

Anna, Gentile drafted; Tyler Rogers joins team

Dean Anna was drafted by the San Diego Padres, and Zach Gentile was drafted by the Boston Red Sox. Gentile signed his contract today, and will play with the Lowell Spinners. I haven't heard about Dean Anna, but he has returned home, presumably to sign with the Padres.

Tyler Rogers, an infielder from Indiana University, joined the team today. He will play SS and 2nd base.

Home Opener Rained Out

Cape Cod Trip

The All-Americans are leaving tomorrow (Wednesday) night at midnight for Cape Cod. This is the 23rd year in a row that the All-Americans will be going to the Cape. Hopefully the wireless network at the motel works well enough that I will be able to post results of each game, along with pictures.

You probably also noticed the new website, designed by Jason Perlman. We still have some fine-tuning to do, but it's a great start.

Along with the new website, the All Americans will be playing home games at some new locations in addition to playing at Bill Davis Stadium. The team will play 3 games at Chillicothe's V.A. This one was a pretty good pitcher’s duel until the 6^th…michael sims was on first for Columbus when hayden johnston hit a ground ball to Xenia SS leroy urbina, who threw the ball over the second baseman’s head, allowing Sims to score and Johnston to advance to third…erich diedrich hit a line drive that one hopped off the right field wall to score johnston…matt steinke followed with a single to right center to score diedrich and make the score 3-0…Xenia scored 2 runs in the top of the 8^th on 3 columbus errors…in the 9^th, reid lamport got andrew wertz to hit a ground ball to 1b danny hayden, but the ball took a tough bounce and went over Hayden’s head…lamport walked the next batter…but then pinch runner derek baer began running towards third a little early, perhaps to get a good jump on the sacrifice bunt and lamport was able to throw him out easily at third…the batter then grounded into a game-ending double play…what a weird turn of events…

Another good outing for Quinn Haselhorst, whose ERA and WHIP dipped to 1.62 and 0.82, respectively…he has 28 strikeouts in 39 IP

Columbus only has 3 games left, so unless Lima loses all of their games, the Locos will most likely end with the best record in the league for the regular season

as usual, jake hale gave columbus a chance to win, going 7 innings without giving up a run...the all americans were on base pretty frequently again on friday, as they had 10 hits...columbus knocked out delaware starter doug stevens with 5 hits and 3 runs in 4 innings ...the relief pitchers for delaware didn't fare much better as they both gave up 3 runs, although there were a few unearned runs in there as the cows made 5 errors...good job by columbus to take advantage of errors...the all americans are now 3 games back of Lima in the standings

the all americans couldn't get much going, as the 1-2-3 hitters were a combined 1-12 with a walk and 6 strikeouts...erich diedrich hit his team-leading 4th home run of the season... another good outing for quinn haselhorst, as he gave up only 1 run on 8 hits in 7 innings with 3 strikeouts...jeffrey decarlo, the starter for the mariners, gave up 1 run on 3 hits in 6 innings...it was a battle of the bullpens and the all-americans blinked first; jeremy williams walked the first batter he faced in the 10^th, reid lamport was then brought in to finish the inning, but he gave up a stolen base and a double to give the mariners the lead in the 10^th…kyle heyne struck out the 1-2-3 hitters in the bottom of the 10^th to get the save…the all americans are 5-5 in 1-run games this season…

great outing by mementowski; allowing only 4 base runners in 6 innings with 4 k’s is pretty dominant…the bullpen pitched 3 scoreless innings to put it away…diedrich and dew have been fantastic for the all-americans halfway through the season…diedrich is batting .386 with 3 home runs, 7 doubles, 21 rbi and an OPS of 1.059…dew is batting .337 with 2 triples, 2 HR, 18 rbi and an OPS of .881…adam samson leads the pitchers with a 3-0 record, a 2.05 ERA and a WHIP of exactly 1…quinn haselhorst is also 3-0, his ERA is 2.25 his WHIP is under 1…jake hale is 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA and a WHIP of 1.30…those numbers are a bit inflated after his last start in which he gave up 7 ER in 6 IP…reid lamport has not allowed a run in 13 IP while striking out 13…his WHIP is 0.69

The All Americans beat the Copperheads 2-1 to sweep the double header in Athens. The All Americans are 17-9 going into the All-Star break having won 6 of their last 7 games, putting them into a tie for second place with Delaware, 1.5 games behind Lima.

the all americans only had 4 hits, but scholfield walked 5 batters, which is just about as bad as givnig up 9 hits…samson was dominant like he has been so far this year, striking out 7 batters in 6 innings…while you don’t “expect” to sweep a team, anderson was 3-18 coming into this double header…the all americans shut down the anderson offense and scored just enough runs to sweep them…they needed this after losing 3 of their last 4 coming into the game…

weekend: All Americans go 3-1

The All Americans split their double header on Saturday at Stark County and swept Lake Erie on Sunday at home. Ryan Dew was 6-10 with 2 home runs and 5 runs batted in for the weekend.

Kevin Mementowski (1-2) went 6 innings in the first game on Saturday and gave up 3 ER on 7 hits and a walk. But Duke Williams went 6 innings and gave up no runs on 2 hits for Stark County.

In the second game, Adam Samson (2-0) went 6 innings and gave up no runs on 4 hits and no walks.

On Sunday, Quinn Haselhorst (1-0) went 6 innings and gave up 1 ER on 7 hits.

In the second game, Jared Balbach (1-0) went 4.2 innings and allowed 3 ER on 6 hits and 2 walks. Aaron Hammons pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed only a hit and a walk to get the save (1)

The All Americans’ record stands at 11-5 after the weekend.

game ball goes to jake hale, who was utterly dominant in 7 IP as he struck out 8 batters and gave up only 1 hit…never game xenia a chance to start a rally…he’s struck out 17 in 14 IP so far this season and has given up 1 run in that span, while limiting opponents to a .125 BAA…
the all americans had lots of baserunners this game…xenia pitchers walked a total of 9 batters as well as giving up 9 hits…you’d hope that the team would score some runs if they’re given 9 free passes, they did, obviously…diedrich is now hitting .366 on the season; his OPS is still above .900…fantastic numbers there…he isn’t the only one hitting well this season…dean anna and matt davis are both at .333…more importantly, they’re both getting on base at well over 40% of the time…that’s exactly what you’re looking for in your leadoff hitter…get on base so the middle of the lineup can bring you home…

On Saturday the 30th, the All Americans will travel to Stark County for a double header starting at 1 pm. Kevin Mementowski (1-1, 6.52) will take the hill in the first game and Jared Balbach (0-0, 0.00 in 4 IP) will start the second game.

On Sunday the 1st of July, the All Americans will host Lake Erie in a double header starting at 1 pm. Quinn Haselhorst (1-0, 4.09) will start the first game and Jeremy Williams (0-1, 3.27) will start the second game.

good pitching performances by both teams tonight…brad stillings of columbus went 5 1/3, giving up 0 ER on 2 hits (a dean anna error led to the cincy runs)…the columbus bullpen didn’t give up much the rest of the way, as jeremy williams, reid lamport, mattt shoemaker, and justin rogers combined for 6 and 1/3 scoreless innings…brett greenwell of cincinnati went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits…danny rosenbaum went 4 and a 1/3, giving up 1 run on 2 hits…

in the bottom of the 12th, chris klimko walked and advanced to 2nd on a sac bunt by michael sims…dean anna, named player of the week by the league last week, delivered the game winning hit with a single to left center…the columbus offense scored 2 runs in the 3rd then didn’t really threaten until the 12th, but the pitching was solid tonight and kept them in the game long enough…

The All Americans travel to Athens tonight to take on the Southern Ohio Copperheads at 7:35. Jake Hale (0-1, 1.29 ERA) takes the mound for Columbus. He will be opposed by Dominique Rodgers (1-0, 2.45).

The Delaware Cows (12-3) defeated the All Americans (6-4) by a score of 6-5 tonight at Bill Davis Stadium.

tyler smith, who has been solid so far this year had trouble finding the strike zone in the first inning and ended up giving up 4 runs in that inning…the all americans fought back to tie the game at 4-4, but the bullpen gave up 2 more runs (one of which was walked in…)

matt davis knocked in ryan dew with a sharp single to center to make the game 6-5 in the bottom of the 9th, but hayden johnston struck out looking to end the game…man, you just hate to end a game on a called strike three…hayjo’s a good hitter though, i doubt we’ll be seeing very much of that this season…how big was that run that was walked in…

the team may be starting to feel some fatigue…look at the schedule; they’re going to play 16 games in 14 days without a break…everybody’s performance will probably suffer a bit…hopefully they can survive till the 4th of july without playing themselves out of contention…this is as good a team as the organization’s had in years…i have no doubt that things will fall into place and these guys will put together a nice streak…hang in there

another big inning by the opposition killed the all americans tonight…they gave up 9 runs in the 6th…i can only go by the play-by-play because i wasn’t at the game but it looks like the inning just got out of control; there was an error or two and the coaches are still trying to get a feel for who should pitch in certain situations…hopefully after 2 of these incidents they’ve got it down…

the offense certainly wasn’t the problem tonight, as columbus had 12 hits, including a 2 run homer by Justin Rogers, who was 3-3 on the night with 3 rbi…eric diedrich was 2-3, matt davis was 3-4 with 2 rbi, matt steinke was also 2-3 with 2 rbi…once again, the team didn’t roll over after going down 10-3; they scored 4 runs in the next 2 innings but obviously it’s tough to come back from a 7 run deficit

haselhorst was roughed up a bit in his last outing, giving up 3 runs and lasting only 3 innings…he came back with an excellent performance today…shoemaker picked up another save…while the offense is very good, the pitching on this team is going to keep them in just about every game…through 8 games they have a team ERA of 3.57, while their opponents have a 4.46 ERA

dean anna was 3-3 with 2 walks and is currently hitting .435 with an OPB of .519… can’t ask much more from your leadoff hitter…eric diedrich continues to hit well, going 2-3 today; he’s batting .387 with a .957 OPS…ryan dew was 2-5 with 2 rbi…he’s knocked in 7 runs in 8 games…

post game: Cows 12 All Americans 11

The Delaware Cows (10-3) defeated the All Americans (5-2) by the score of 12 to 11 this afternoon in Delaware. Check the league website for the box score.

wow…what a game… columbus scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st to take an early lead…based on the quality of the pitching so far this season you could almost assume that it was a pretty secure lead…and for 3 innings it looked like delaware wasn’t going to do anything offensively…but things got out of control in the 4th inning…3 runs were walked in and the cows hit a grand slam…they ended up scoring all 12 of their runs that inning…obviously the pitching can’t be perfect every game but this is something you definitely wouldn’t expect…give the all americans credit for chipping away at the delaware lead over the next 5 innings to turn it from a laugher into a nail-biter…we know that giving up 12 runs in an inning probably won’t happen again this season, so no reason to get too upset…it’s just 1 game and it’s still very early in the season

post game: Locos 1 All Americans 0

well, the pitching for both sides was pretty impressive tonight, as the only run scored was off of a solo HR by Lima…the all americans forgot to bring their bats with them on the bus, managing only 6 hits in 9 innings…twice they got a runner to third (with the size of that field, a single really doesn’t score a runner from second) and failed to bring him home…

columbus pitchers worked in and out of jams, which was good to see…

on the bus, head coach brian mannino mentioned that some of the players needed to learn the signs…i was wondering what caused some of those baserunning gaffes tonight, perhaps that was the reason

this was a game the all americans probably should have won, but they simply failed to get timely hits…

Coach Mannino mentioned that the team looked “flat” after 2 days off…can’t really disagree with that, considering the lack of offensive production and some of the errors made in the field today

assistant coach ryan fleming was ejected from the game tonight, his first time in his short career as an all americans coach…it appeared from where we were sitting that coach fleming was speaking very calmly with the umpire after a questionable call (or non-call)…he didn’t shout or swear at the umpire, but in any case he was tossed…apparently you have to go sit on the bus if you’re kicked out, seems kind of ridiculous to me…should’ve pulled a Bobby Valentine and put on a disguise though
